Role Of Police In Physical Domestic Violence
Abstract
The term ‘Violence’ means behavior which harms somebody physical and ‘Domestic’ means connected with the home or family. Here ‘Domestic Violence’ means any person who is oppressed or harmed by her/ his family persons Physically, mentally and financially. Not only in India but in the whole world, some men and women are treated unfairly in their homes by their relatives. Many women are killed due to dowry system by their In- Laws and some for ugliness. Then the role of the police is become very important for saving their life because police is one of the most ubiquitous organization of the society. The policemen, therefore, happened to be the most visible representative of the government. In an hour of need, danger, crisis and difficulty, when a citizen does not knows, what to do and whom to approach, the police station and policeman happen to be the most appropriate and approachable unit and person for him or her. The police is expected to be the most accessible, interactive and dynamic organization of any society. Its roles, functions and duties in the society are natural to be varied, and multifarious on the one hand; and complicated, knotty and complex on the other. Broadly, speaking the twin roles, which the police is expected to play in a society are maintenance of law and order. However, the ramifications of these two duties are numerous which result in making a large inventory of duties, functions, powers, roles and responsibilities of the police organization.
The roles and functions of the police in general are:
- to uphold and enforce the law impartially, and to protect life, liberty, property, human rights and dignity of the members of the public.
- to promote and preserve public order.
- to protect internal security.
- to prevent crimes and reduce the opportunities for the commission of crimes through its on preventive actions.
- to take charge, as a police officer on duty.
- to train, motivate and ensure welfare of police personnel.
